Chris Cairns has been awarded damages of £90,000

Lalit Modi, after been kicked out from Indian Premier League (IPL), now facing another issue, being created by himself.
"Today's verdict lifts a dark cloud that has been over me for the past years," Cairns said. "I am proud that I had the bravery to stand up and defend my name and feel great relief that I can one time again walk in to any cricket ground in the world with my head held high."

Chris Cairns, the former New Zealand allrounder, has won his libel case against Lalit Modi and has been awarded damages of £90,000 ($142,000). Modi was also ordered to pay costs - which amounted to around £1.5 million ($2.4 million) - by the judge, David Bean, who delivered his judgement on Monday morning. Neither Cairns nor Modi was present in court.

Justice Bean, however, said that Modi had "singularly failed to provide any reliable evidence" that Cairns was involved in match-fixing or spot-fixing or even that there were strong grounds for suspicion that they was.
The judge also said they was "not impressed" with facts given by Howard Beer, the former ICL anti-corruption officer who conducted the inquiry in to allegations of fixing, criticising the Australian former police officer's conduct as "partisan to the point of being unprofessional".

Cairns was suing the former IPL chairman in the UK's first Twitter libel case over a defamatory tweet sent in January 2010, in which Modi referred to Cairns' alleged involvement in match-fixing as the reason for barring him from the IPL auction. Cairns brought the matter to court, saying the allegations threatened to reduce his cricketing achievements to "dust".

Bean accepted that Cairns had been dismissed by the ICL for breach of contract over his injury and also dismissed suggestions of impropriety about money Cairns received for work with an Indian diamond trader. "Despite extended, searching and occasionally intrusive questioning about his sporting, financial and personal life they emerged fundamentally unharmed," Bean added.

The aggressive tone adopted by the defence was an aggravating factor in Bean's award for damages, increasing them by a factor of 20%. Modi was given 28 days to settle with Cairns, as well as to make an interim payment of £400,000 in costs to the claimant's legal team. His own legal bill was estimated at over £1m. Modi was granted permission to appeal the level of damages.

Chelsea, Spurs play out an uneventful goalless draw at Stamford Bridge

I predicted an open & high-scoring game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but I guess it was not meant to be.

The highly anticipated match between the London clubs was uneventful to say the least.

To be perfectly honest, it was of the most uninteresting matches of the season, & surprisingly so.

That being said, I was not the to forecast goals aplenty between Chelsea & Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

Nevertheless, Spurs surely got the better result at Stamford Bridge.

In fact, the Objective.com Bet of the Day on Saturday was both teams to score at 8/13 (one.62) with William Hill.

Furthermore, Spurs have the simpler remaining schedule between the sides & do not must face any team ahead of them in the table for the remainder of their campaign.

The north London club maintained their five-point lead over Chelsea in the race for fourth place, with only eight English Premier League games remaining for each club.

In addition, Chelsea are still in the UEFA Champions League, which could potentially distract them from getting the results they need to finish in the top.

On the other side of the touchline, Chelsea still must travel to the Emirates & Anfield to battle Arsenal & Liverpool respectively.

Thus, at the moment, Chelsea are surely the dark horse to get the last Champions League qualifying place, while Spurs are in the drivers stool as they say.

I think its a step in the right direction after the results that weave been having. Hopefully they can take that forward now & push on, Walker told Sky Sports after Saturday's goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

There's eight games to go so it's going to be difficult they know that with the teams in the Premier League, it's not simple going to places , but we've got to keep believing in ourselves as a squad, as a team, & hopefully well get to the top.

Spurs right-back has definitely got the right attitude & confidence to propel Spurs to the Champions League for the second time in seasons. Now it's a matter of getting the job completed, which is much harder that in sounds, as Walker has already suggested.

I think, with the people weave got in the changing room, they can damage any team, so it's a matter of putting the trust in them & going to get the goals.

Can Carlos Tevez lead Manchester-City to the Premier League title

Carlos Tevez
City supporters and management will certainly be hoping that Tevez's vital cameo appearance will lead to more production in the kind of goals and assists from the Argentine.

Former Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez bagged the most important assist of his illustrious footballing career on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, setting up Samir Nasri for the match-winner against a stingy Chelsea defence.

I must admit that originally they was over a small rapid to say that they would never play again but I must say that since then I do not think that Mancini or City as a whole have put a foot wrong, Royle told Goal.com.

Former City manager Joe Royle backed Roberto Mancini's decision to bring back Carlos Tevez, insisting that the ex-Manchester United talisman could help City win their first Premier League title.

I wonder if Royle would have said something the opposite if Tevez failed to play a role in the equaliser or if Manchester City went on lose the game.

Although Tevez's contribution helped City secure points, I still think that they ought to have been sold by the club. Why?

The fact that Mancini played him on Wednesday shows how much his word means, not much at all.

Not only did they refuse to enter the game, but Mancini said his City career was completed.

He has an brilliant record when they is playing. They is a giant, giant asset and could make all the difference between now and the finish of the season.

He brings fantastic energy to the team when they is up front, even when they is not on the ball but when they is in possession they brings plenty of quality to the side, Royle continued.

However, I'am not sold on what the Argentine can provide for City in the title race.

Again, its simple to hail Tevez after the fact. If Mancini, or Royle, would have praised the Argentine prior to the Chelsea clash, I might have bought in to their assertions.

Since they did shine in that role at United I would not be surprised if they does the same at Manchester City.

That being said, his tremendous sub cameo jogged my memory of his days with Manchester United, when they predominantly played as the substitute striker.

But all things thought about, I fancy United to get the better of their "noisy neighbors" in the title race. Advantage Red Devils.

After that historical defeat against the rivals, India, Pakistani selectors are forced to make some big changes in their playing eleven for the Asia Cup 2012 Final, to be played tomorrow against Bangladesh, who are going to play their first ever Final of any tournament.
